“Stand up straight. Don’t slouch!”
I’m sure you’ve heard your mother say that a million times, yet it didn’t seem practical until maybe you say yourself in the the mirror, or noticed your posture as you walked by a Storefront window and say your reflection.
Well, I get asked about Posture most every day. Over the 22 years I’ve been a Chiropractor in Costa Mesa I have given information about posture to most every patient I have worked with. Posture is really the outward reflection of what your entire body structure is doing on the inside. If your spine is twisted or your head is forward and your shoulders are slumping … you will have POOR Posture!
On the other side of the coin, if you have a straight spine, with no misalignment’s and your head is on top of your body, your posture will be Great. Not only will you look great, but you will feel better. You will have more energy and everything you do will be easier.
Poor posture can cause misalignment’s in the spine to develop, which can keep the nervous system from functioning normally and cause pain and discomfort. It also affects digestive and breathing systems, leaving you as a patient, tired, unable to work efficiently or maybe even unable to move properly.
As a Chiropractor we work within a program of Adjust-Support-Rehab or what we call ASR, the concept of care. This allows us to make adjustments to your spine that will help correct your posture, then using supports; like an orthotic for your shoe to help maintain that correction and then we teach you how to do ongoing Rehabilitation, which is exercises that help build strength to your spine and posture over a period of time.
It is important that you have proper support with the feet and the arches, but it’s also important to have cervical (neck) support. It is estimated that people spend one-third of their lives sleeping and if you the patient are sleeping improperly, you are causing repetitive strains on the important neck structures.
A normal curve of your neck helps to improve the vascular and neurological functions of the body. A proper pillow helps support the neck with gentle traction-aligning the head, neck and spine during sleep.
Lets take a TEST and see if you may need help with your posture?
1. Do you stand or walk on hard surfaces for more than 4 hours daily?
2. Do you participate regularly in any physical sport (golf, tennis, bowling, etc.)?
3. Are you age 40 or over?
4. Have you had a prior injury to your knee, back or neck?
5. Do your shoes wear unevenly?
6. Is one of your legs shorter than the other?
7. Do your feet “toe out” when you’re walking?
If you answered YES to any of the above you should get a check up to see what your posture really looks like. As a Chiropractor we help patients on a day to day basis with pain and discomfort. Give us a chance to see if you can get some help and find out what your body is really trying to tell you.
